Athena's helmet composed of two Silenos masks
Lot 3117
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. 2nd-3rd centuries. Tessera (Lead, 13 mm, 2.46 g). Bust of Athena to right, wearing a helmet composed of two Silenos masks, one facing left and one facing upward; plume behind. Rev. Blank. Apparently unpublished. A remarkable representation of the goddess. Some surface roughness, otherwise, very fine.

From a collection of lead tesserae from Asia Minor.

This motif of Athena wearing a helmet composed of Silenoi was hitherto unknown on tesserae, but the design does appear on intaglio engraved gems (see for example AGD München 3, 2224 and Maaskant-Kleibrink 324). The design is also known on lead seals (Leukel N67 and Vossen collection 211).
